AFTERTONES

TABU (by Janis Ian)

Janis wrote this little number on Friday 4 October. She "just got carried away last night, after an evening off!"  And she then sent it straight to me, asking if I would include it on the Aftertones site.

It's a pleasure for you to be here, Janis!

          TABU
An original re-write by Janis Ian herself ....

… to the music of Janis Ian's "Tattoo", from her album "Breaking Silence".

Her new scent was sprayed upon her wrist
It was stronger than the old one
Picked out at random from a list
The bottle even rolled on
Centuries lived in disguise
Finally now, there’s a spark in her eyes
“Do they take Amex?” she sighs
“’cause I only have a five”
Tabu

She waits in the line to the left
of a stranger on the right
Tall dark and handsome, well met
She wonders if he’s free tonight
Then when he reaches the booth
noting his elegant poise
Seeing his wallet, fat and rock solid
Thinking of life’s many joys
Thinking of life’s many joys
with Tabu

    It gets harder every night
Street-walking out among the stars, she says
“Somewhere out there is my Mister Right
    “Still my beating heart.
“If I only knew a man
“who would want me as I am
    “Maybe new perfume will help
“I will go and treat myself”
     Tabu

Is he married with a wife?
does he leave the house at dawn?
have a mistress on the side?
Does he keep his socks on?
She resolves to try
and she casually bats her limpid eyes
but the salesgirl says “Why, Dwight!
“What a lovely surprise!
“Did you leave the children home with Granny Wright?
“’cause I’ve got a brand new perfume on tonight
“Tabu …”
