AFTERTONES

I Would Like To Swim

Janis likes nice warm weather.  So for her and Pat's first real vacation in a very long time, they went to Alaska.  Pat apparently had something to do with choice of venue. Janis wrote a fine newsletter about it on their return, which inspired this song.  Read the newsletter via the link below, before diving into my re-write.

And Janis was the first to respond, literally 5 minutes after I posted this on the Message Board ... saying "Thanks for a really fabulous laugh!  I enjoyed the hell out of that".

     I Would Like To Swim

... A celebration of Janis and Pat's Alaskan vacation, to the music of Janis Ian's  "I Would Like To Dance".

Look at me
I would like to swim
but the temperature here
is a sin
so I'll stay in with Cyndi and Jim

I don't want to be cool
I'm just desperate
to haul in a King
or a trout or a frog
or a lilypad
even an eel

In the midnight-sun land
Jim and Cyndi do all
they can do to enhance
our vacation with puffins
and otters and salmon and clams
and I wear ALL their
shirts, socks and pants

I would like warmth maintained
and it STILL seems a shame
to sit on my hands
but the only heat source left to me
is the seat of Jim's pants

Not another woman in this world
who could fail at fishing
casting my lure at random
longing for the jump
of a rod
in my hands
Look at me, lying green
back in Soldotna
catching cold, not saying "gotcha"
far from Pat's Salmon "Lily"

Look at me
would you like to fly
I'm the Ice Maid
of Alaskan Skies
But I can't get my head
to see where I'm going
'cos I'm
so low
